VALPARAISO | A 20-year-old Valparaiso man was arrested and a 15-year-old Valparaiso boy was released to his mother after police found them in a car where marijuana was being smoked.
A third person, a 19-year-old Valparaiso man, ran from the scene.
Devin Bafia, 20, of Valpariaso, was charged with maintaining a common nuisance, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.
A 15-year-old Valparaiso boy will be charged with visiting a common nuisance.
Police were called about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to the Valparaiso YMCA, 1201 Cumberland Crossing Drive, for a report of people using drugs in a car parked in the parking lot.
When police arrived, officers smelled marijuana in the car.
Bafia,the driver, was asked to step out of the car and was placed under arrest.
The 19-year-old Valparaiso man ran from area. Police searched for the man but did not find him.
The 15-year-old boy in the car was taken to the Valparaiso police station and released to his mother.
Officers went to the home of the 19-year-old man, where they spoke to his parents. Police said the man’s father called his son, but the son refused to come home to speak with officers.
Police are seeking to charge the 19-year-old with visiting a common nuisance, resisting law enforcement and taking a minor into a place where controlled substances are unlawfully present.
