VALPARAISO | A true musical theatre phenomenon, "Jekyll & Hyde" the musical, opens at 8:00 p.m. August 5, 6, 12, 13 and 2:00 p.m. August 7 and 14 at the Memorial Opera House.
The Memorial Opera House brings to the stage a true musical theatre phenomenon, "Jekyll & Hyde".
"Jekyll & Hyde" is an evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, "Jekyll & Hyde" is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father's mental illness lies in the separation of Man's evil nature from his good, Dr. Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde.
The Memorial Opera House's production features over 25 actors from across Northwest Indiana and as far as South Bend.
"I've been looking forward to directing here [The MOH] for a long time," said Scot McDonald (Valpo), Jekyll and Hyde director. "I love the nostalgia of the old building, which is both quaint and majestic at the same time. It's a good energy, and people love to perform here."
"Jekyll is one of my all time favorite musicals, and I believe we have a superb cast--consisting of many different levels of experience, from novice to extremely experienced," added McDonald. "I feel both honored and blessed in many ways."
The physically and vocally demanding role of "Dr. Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde" will be portrayed by Jeff DeBoer, who was last seen as the "Billy Flynn" in the MOH's hit production of CHICAGO. Also, from her starring role in CHICAGO as "Velma Kelly", is Kyrie Anderson as "Lucy Harris" the prostitute who falls in love with Jekyll but is strangely drawn toward Hyde as well.
"Emma Carew" portrayed by Mary Herrod, is Henry's fiancée. Mary is a graduate of Milliken University and is studying voice performance at Longy School of Music in Boston.
"Jekyll & Hyde" ran for four years on Broadway and produced two major worldwide hits: "This is The Moment" and "Someone Like You". The Memorial Opera House's "Jekyll & Hyde" the musical, should be on the top of your "must see" shows of 2011.
