VALPARAISO | A short month and bad weather reduced the overall ridership on the city's V-Line intracity bus service in February, but it still had one of its highest totals ever.
Meanwhile, the average daily ridership on the ChicaGo Dash express commuter bus to Chicago's Loop grew slightly.
Assistant City Planner and city Transit Director Tyler Kent said the total V-Line ridership in February was 7,088. That's down from January's all-time high of more than 8,000 riders but still ranks in the top five monthly totals.
The Yellow Route, which serves the city's west side, had 2,734 riders; the Green Route, which serves the east side, 2,203; the Brown Route, serving Valparaiso University and the major shopping centers on the south end of the city, 1,632; the Orange Route weekend shuttle to the South Shore's Dune Park station, 341, and the Red Route, which runs only on weekends in the city, 178.
Kent said February's big snow storm forced the service to shut down for part of one days and all of the next because of the unsafe conditions.
The Dash had a total of 3,224 riders for a daily average of 84.8, which was up one from January's previous all-time high. Kent said use continues to be good in March, hitting the 90s twice this week.
