VALPARAISO | If you like to draw or know someone who does, the Family & Youth Services Bureau needs your help.

The bureau is sponsoring Chalk the Walk, a fundraiser set for June 22 at the Porter County courthouse square. Organizers will sell sidewalk squares for $150 to $500 to businesses and organizations that want to support children and families in Porter County. Families also are encouraged to sponsor a space.

Participants will receive a box of brightly-colored pastel chalk and spend four to five hours creating a work of art at their space on the sidewalk. Each square is about three feet by three feet.

Although not permanent, the chalk is so colorful and intense that it will be visible for some time, perhaps up to two weeks, even if it rains, said Jackie Gray, director of development and community relations for the Family & Youth Services Bureau.

"We're looking for sponsors as well as artists," Gray said. "If someone wants to sponsor a square but doesn't know an artist, we will match them with someone we have recruited."

Gray said the bureau is seeking people of all ages and skill levels to assign to businesses and organizations that need an artist to do their square. The goal is to have between 100 and 200 people drawing that day, she said.

Initial sponsors include Anderson Insurance; Blachly, Tabor, Bozik & Hartman; Horizon Bank; Porter Health Care System and Jack and Carol Ronneau.

"The funds will be directed toward our clinical services programs, which include the Strengthening Families Program as well as individual counseling," Gray said.

Many other organizations throughout the country, including the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, have done this type of event, and while formats differ, they all are great family-friendly events, Gray said.

Family & Youth Services Bureau volunteer Laura Evans said artists can be creative and have the drawing tell their story. They also can have the words "sponsored by" and their business name on the artwork.
