VALPARAISO | Avalon Springs Health Campus, 2400 Silhavy Road, is hosting a special program for in-home caregivers from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Legacy neighborhood. The Caregiver's Day Off program will include a free lunch, Caregiver Survival Kit, complimentary beauty and pampering services, as well as a special educational presentation from Louise Thompson of the Alzheimer's Association, all while loved ones enjoy complimentary adult day care during the event. Each participant will receive a take-home meal for the whole family. Make a reservation by Jan. 27 to Avalon Springs at (219) 462-1778.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than 15 million Americans provide unpaid care for a person living with Alzheimer's or other dementias, with 80 percent of this care being provided by family caregivers. Additionally, more than 60 percent of Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers rate the emotional stress of care giving as high or very high; one-third report symptoms of depression. Due to the physical and emotional toll of care giving on their own health, Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers had $8.7 billion in additional health care costs in 2011.
