VALPARAISO | Fire hit a strip mall housing multiple businesses on Calumet Avenue in Valparaiso on Tuesday night, officials said Wednesday.
Fire crews were called to the building at 3125 Calumet Ave. at 11:30 p.m. by police, who were on scene investigating a burglar alarm and smelled smoke, Battalion Chief Mark Taylor said.
The building houses a Jimmy John's, JD Crepe Company, Fagen Pharmacy, a dry cleaner and a physical therapy office, Taylor said.
By the time firefighters arrived, flames were shooting from the roof, Taylor said.
Firefighters battled the blaze until 4:30 a.m. No one was injured as a result of the fire, Taylor said.
The bulk of the damage to the building was to the facade, Taylor said.
"Structurally, it's good. It's salvageable," Taylor said. "There's just a lot of smoke and water damage."
The fire began before thunderstorms blew through the region, Taylor said. Lightning is not believed to have been a factor in the blaze, he said.
Contrary to rumors swirling on social media, there were no explosions associated with the blaze, Taylor said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
