VALPARAISO | A local Boy Scout troop reported the theft of $3,500 in donations during the city's annual Popcorn Festival Saturday.

Richard McNamara, who serves as chairman of Troop 920, told police the group was breaking down a tent it had along Washington Street, just north of Lincolnway when he discovered the "red stained cedar cigar box" containing the money was missing.

McNamara said he placed the box on one of the tables and left the area to get a soda, according to police. When he returned at 6:10 p.m., he realized the box missing.

The troop had been collecting donations throughout the day and counting money along the way, McNamara said.

No members of the troop had any knowledge of the whereabouts of the box, police said.

There were no security cameras in the area.
