VALPARAISO | A smell of burning plastic Wednesday morning at Valparaiso High School prompted school officials to call the fire department and evacuate the building before the start of school.

Michael Berta said in a message to parents an unusual smell was reported by students and staff at the high school about 8 a.m. The smell was described as being similar to burning plastic or burning Styrofoam.

The school was inspected by the Valparaiso Fire Department, Valparaiso Police Department and school staff members.

Berta said the source of the smell was not identified, and no evidence of anything burning was found.

After about 45 minutes, the students and staff were allowed back in the building.
