KOUTS | Two candidates are running for a seat in District 2 of the East Porter County School Board, and both candidates have experience in public schools.
Incumbent Karen Higbie, has been on the school board for eight years, while Christopher Fields is familiar with working with Kouts administration and teachers.
“For six years, I was the athletic director and assistant principal in Kouts, so I have experience in this school system,” Fields said, who is currently the principal at Ben Franklin Middle School in Valparaiso.
“I offer a good parental insight to decisions,” Higbie said, who has two children that attend school in Kouts. “I enjoy it and I enjoy helping the school board making decisions,” Higbie said, who is running for a third term. She is a stay-at-home mom, and said because of that, she can devote more time to the board.
“I can fully commit to meetings and even out of town meetings,” Higbie said. “I can also be a part of additional committees and have extra time that others may not.”
Higbie said at this point she does not want to make any changes to the School Board, but added there could be a possibility of looking into new technologies for the schools.
Fields said he is running for the position because it is his civic duty. He added it's a time where the School Board needs to let the state legislators know what they are doing can hurt public education, such as decreasing funding.
“I know that Karen has experience, and I don’t have anything against her,” Fields said. “It's critical time for the School Board, and I want to continue to promote what's best for the school district and keep the opportunities we have for students. It's not a time to cut back on quality of education or our educators.”
