VALPARAISO | A 16-year-old girl told the court Friday in a written statement that years of sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of Center Township resident Alex Coronado have taken a big toll.
She said she no longer trusts others and her relationship with family members has suffered.
"My childhood was taken away," she said, "but I can assure everyone my future will be very successful."
Coronado, before being sentenced to 15 years behind bars per the terms of his plea agreement, told Porter Superior Court Judge Bill Alexa his actions were "unconscionable, selfish and without excuse."
"I know an apology will never be enough," he said, but he voiced hope he will one day be forgiven.
The girl told investigators she had sexual intercourse with Coronado more than 50 times over a period of at least three years, with the last case occurring in early July, records state.
Coronado is accused of providing the girl with alcohol and marijuana before the sexual activity, which allegedly began when she was younger than 14.
The girl told investigators she informed her mother about the abuse when it began and before it elevated to the level of sexual intercourse, but nothing was done, court records state. The girl's mother confirmed her daughter had reported the abuse to her years ago, but she thought it was a misunderstanding.
The girl provided investigators with a pair of her underwear sealed in a plastic bag that she said contained a DNA sample linking Coronado to the sexual abuse, according to documents.
Coronado pleaded guilty to a felony count of sexual misconduct with a minor in return for prosecutors dropping two counts of child molesting, including one that carried a potential sentence of 20 to 50 years behind bars.
He will serve five years on formal probation upon his release from prison and is required to undergo sex offender treatment and register as a sex offender. He can complete his prison term in half the time or less with good behavior and participation in various programs.
