VALPARAISO | The Christmas for the Elderly program raised $45,297.50 to help people in the community this holiday season.
This year's goal was $45,000.
"In this economy I'm really grateful that people realize there is such a need," said Maria Galka, vice president of fund development.
Ten people were featured in articles in The Times between Thanksgiving and Christmas and all 10 received the items they requested. More people also will be helped through the donations.
"Ray called to tell me he just loves his lift chair and what a difference it has made in his life," Galka said.
The Visiting Nurse Association and The Times Media Co. jointly sponsor the Christmas for the Elderly charity program, which has raised more than $550,000 in the past 25 years. This money helps improve quality of lives for Porter County residents. For Christmas 2011, the program raised $42,652.25.
The VNA still is accepting donations to help. The VNA is a nonprofit home health agency licensed by the state.
Resident donations and United Way funding allow the agency to provide care at a reduced rate.
The money raised through this program buys such items as lift chairs, Lifeline devices and service, wheelchairs and other things that make life easier for the patients.
