VALPARAISO | Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the last appearance in Valparaiso of John Philip Sousa and his band, the combined bands of Valparaiso University’s music department will perform their annual Sousa Concert at 1 p.m. May 3 in the Chapel of the Resurrection on the Valparaiso University campus.

The bands appearing in the concert will be the Chamber Concert Band, the Luce Concert Band, the Valparaiso High School Band and the Valparaiso Community University Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Doebler.

Highlighting this year’s concert will be the appearance of John Philip Sousa IV, great grandson of the famed composer. He will narrate the performance and will be autographing and selling editions of his book, “John Philip Sousa’s America.” The book sells for $35.

Mitch Markovitz, creator of the new series of South Shore Line posters, and a percussionist in the Valparaiso Community University Concert Band, will present an edition of his poster painting of John Philip Sousa to Mr. Sousa and will sell editions after the performance with all proceeds going to the band.

Individual tickets are available for the concert with an admission charge. Prices per regular season show are $15 Adults, $10 Seniors/Non-VU Students, and no charge for VU faculty, staff, and students unless otherwise indicated.
