VALPARAISO | The Shades of Gray, a local contemporary folk group, will perform to benefit Dayspring Women’s Shelter at 5 p.m. Jan. 13 at Trinity Lutheran Church at the corner of Washington and Chicago streets.

The recently launched program seeks to help three target groups: women who are homeless, at-risk of becoming homeless or transitioning out of homelessness.

Executive Director Rachel Niemi said the program provides a safe place for women during the day and helps create stability for clients.

“Stability might look like that she is still homeless but doing something meaningful,” she said. “You have to put yourself in their shoes. Little things add up. Maybe if I can help her get a driver’s license that can make all the difference in the world. You have to be mindful that was a big task and you have to feel good about what you can do for them and not judge."
