VALPARAISO | A 12-year-old boy faces charges of disorderly conduct and battery after reportedly attacking a police officer at Saturday's Popcorn Festival when he was told to pull up his pants.

Police said they first encountered the boy at 1:45 p.m. as a result of an argument he was having with his mother in front of the Round the Clock restaurant, 217 Lincolnway.

He complied with the first request to pull up his pants, which were down around the middle of his thighs revealing his underwear, police said.

Police said they saw him a short time later with his pants back down around his thighs. When told a second time to pull the pants up, the boy reportedly pulled them down lower.

When told again to pull his pants up, the boy uttered an obscenity at the officer at which time his mother grabbed him with her arm around his neck, police said. After police separated the two, the boy allegedly attempted to tackle an officer and began punching another in the leg as officers took him to the ground.

The boy was taken by police to the county Juvenile Detention Center.
