VALPARAISO | The Porter County Sheriff’s Department reminds residents that snowmobiles operated on the traveled portion of public highways in Porter County must be registered.

Snowmobiles may be registered at the Sheriff's Department, 2755 Ind. 49, from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday through Friday (except holidays).

Owners should bring:

• A state snowmobile registration card.

• Evidence of a current insurance policy covering personal property damage in the amount of $25,000 and personal liability in the amount of $100,000.

A new weather resistant registration sticker will be provided and must be attached to the vehicle. There is no charge for the sticker.

The penalty for failure to properly register a vehicle is a $50 citation.
