BOONE TOWNSHIP | The man found dead Monday in a rural drainage culvert died from an apparent gunshot wound, according to police and coroner reports.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said Tuesday that an autopsy was completed Tuesday. He said the victim is a white or Hispanic male.

Harris said although he has not officially ruled on the cause and manner of death, the Porter County Sheriff’s Department will consider the case a homicide investigation.

Harris said the next step for his office is to determine the identity of the man. Harris said he does not know how old the man was, nor would he say when the man died. But Harris said he could have been dead for several months.

The body, which police said Monday was already decomposing, was found in a culvert about 5 p.m. Monday in the area of County Roads 1000 South and 500 West by a person driving through the area, said Sgt. Larry LaFlower, a sheriff's spokesman.

Police said anyone with information about the man’s death or anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity recently in that area should call Cmdr. Jeff Biggs at (219) 477-3141.
