VALPARAISO | Police are investigating five incidents of explosive devices found in residential neighborhoods around Valparaiso.
Police said one incident was reported Saturday, the rest Sunday. Most involved a plastic bottle containing two common household substances that cause a chemical reaction when they come in contact with each other. The reaction in a closed bottle causes the bottle to expand and explode, police stated.
In four of the cases, there was an explosion. Police said in one case, the bottle had not exploded.
No injuries were reported, but police said the devices are potentially dangerous.
Valparaiso police Sgt. Mike Grennes said that anyone who finds an unexploded device should not touch or remove the device. The chemicals inside the bottle along with the warm temperatures make the device dangerous and unpredictable, he said.
The incidents were reported at homes in the 1500 block of Boca Lago Drive, in the 2900 block of Prentiss Drive, the 3600 block of Goodrich Road and in the 1350 block of Jade Boulevard.
Police continue to investigate and encourage anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call the Valparaiso Police Department at 462-2135 or text a tip to TIP411 (847-411) and enter the keyword “Valpo” in the message field prior to sending a message.
