VALPARAISO | Joanne Maynard turns over the reigns of First Contact as director to Barbara Kemler.
As director, Maynard guided First Contact for the past 23 years as a Christian ministry to help meet many needs in Porter County. Two main goals of First Contact were to assist the needy more efficiently and to assist pastors and their staff from the many calls they receive.
First Contact first requires clients to go to a Township Trustee near them and then First Contact adds to their need of rent, utilities, or emergency medicine. Church benevolent funds, individuals, organizations, businesses and small grants provide funding for assistance.
"Health problems of my husband (Lee) and I made us aware that a director replacement was important to insure that the ministry of First Contact continued in the future," said Maynard. Barbara Kemler has been a volunteer for eight years and will now step in as director to continue the ministry of help to those in need.
First Contact addresses the basics of life by assisting to prevent homelessness with rent or mortgage help and also helping to prevent a utility disconnection. Eighteen volunteers serve faithfully at the First Contact offices (Valpo & Portage) weekly.
First Contact is a tax-exempt organization and donations to help with these basics of life are needed.
First Contact is located at 61 Indiana Suite D. Call (219) 462-8332.
