Five students from Northwest Indiana were among the names released this week by National Merit Scholarship Corp. representing the first group of winners in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Andrew Hurst, of Chesterton High School, was awarded the National Merit Citizen Watch Scholarship. He is considering a career in biology.

Jennette Sink, of Chesterton, was awarded the National Merit NiSource Employee Scholarship. She is considering a career in elementary education. Sink is homeschooled.

Ashley Talesky, of Munster High School, was awarded the National Merit BP Foundation Inc. Scholarship. She is considering a career in biomedicine.

Noelle Eveland, of Valparaiso High School, was awarded the National Merit BP Foundation Inc. Scholarship. She is considering a career in chemical engineering.

Haley Sorrells, of Valparaiso High School, was awarded the National Merit Boeing Scholarship. She is considering a career in biomedical engineering.

About 1,000 high school seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 200 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations.

Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.
