VALPARAISO | A Valparaiso man was sentenced Friday to 60 days of community service and nearly three years of probation after pleading guilty to having sex with a 14-year-old Boone Grove Middle School student while he was working as a janitor at the school.
Porter Superior Court Judge Bill Alexa approved the plea agreement for 21-year-old Kevin Abernathy II, who made the unusual move of pleading guilty during his initial court hearing last month.
Police said Abernathy sneaked into the girl's bedroom three times late at night between February and March, and they had sex during two of those visits.
He reportedly told police he met the girl at a bonfire a year earlier and the girl said she told Abernathy she was 15, police said. The girl told police Abernathy approached her on Facebook and she agreed to sneak him into her bedroom.
The accusations came to light after Abernathy voiced concern about his actions with two of his fellow custodians, police said.
Abernathy was ordered Friday to avoid further contact with the girl, undergo HIV testing, complete sex offender treatment and pay the girl's counseling bill of $1,275.
