VALPARAISO | A Gary man used a handgun to beat a Valparaiso woman, then fled toward Valparaiso University where he was arrested by university police.
Kevin Brown, 20, charged with battery with a deadly weapon, intimidation with a weapon, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, strangulation, domestic battery with a child present, criminal recklessness with a firearm and domestic battery.
Police responded to a call for help from a woman Thursday morning in the 1200 block of Chicago Street.
According to police, when officers arrived, they could hear the woman screaming for help. While officers were attempting to enter the apartment through a front door, Brown fled out a back door.
Police said the woman was beaten by Brown, who was a friend. The woman told police Brown used a handgun to beat her.
Valparaiso city and university police searched the area. Brown was found by university police at the U.S. 30 entrance to the university.
Valparaiso police obtained a search warrant for the apartment and found a handgun, ammunition and a sawed-off shotgun.
The woman was taken to Porter Regional Hospital where she was treated and released.
