VALPARAISO | The Porter County Community Foundation hopes to send a strong message about homelessness in the region by gathering forces for a one-day event, GIVE Day, on Nov. 8.

On this one day only, gifts to nonprofit organizations that provide shelter services will receive matching funds through a pool of more than $50,000 from generous sponsors.

“We’re doing it because we think it will help raise awareness of the problem of homelessness in our community, as well as raise some resources for organizations that work with housing issues,” said Barb Young, Porter County Community Foundation president.

GIVE Day is a way that the Porter County Community Foundation works toward the goals in Porter County’s 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness. No Place Like Home was released early this year by the foundation.

Those interested in participating in GIVE Day can become involved in a number of ways. On Nov. 8, people can give online at to qualify for matching funds. Visa and MasterCard are accepted. They can also select one or more organizations to help from a list of 17 designated organizations.

People may also give in person from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 8 at GIVE Day headquarters at The Times office, 1111 Glendale Blvd., in Valparaiso.

“It’s a Porter County initiative and the idea of online giving has been done by many foundations across the country" Young said. "Our website will have a leaderboard that shows how giving is going throughout the day and we have a special software program to be able to do it.”

Nonprofit organizations who will receive much-needed funds from the event include Alice’s House, The Caring Place, Dayspring Women’s Center, Gabriel’s Horn, Habitat for Humanity, Housing Opportunities, Moraine House, New Creation Business Advocates, Open Arms Women’s Shelter, Opportunity Enterprises, Porter County Housing Fund of the Porter County Community Foundation, Porter-Starke Services, Rebuilding Together Duneland, Rebuilding Together Hebron and Rebuilding Together Valparaiso.
