VALPARAISO | Police are investigating the death of a 20-year-old Valparaiso University student and an 18-year-old woman inside an apartment.
Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris called the deaths "probable and suspected heroin overdoses."
Harris identified the two as Abdullah M. Alqirnas, of Saudi Arabia, and Rachael N. Hill, of Valparaiso.
Police said they were contacted Sunday morning by an employer and asked to check the welfare of Hill, who had not shown up for work for two days.
Police went to Hill's apartment in the 2100 block of Beech Street and found a door to the apartment unlocked.
Police entered and found Hill and Alqirnas dead in the bedroom.
Harris said his office was notified at noon Sunday.
Police said drug paraphernalia was discovered near both people.
Officers are continuing to investigate but foul play is not suspected, police said.
Harris said Alquirnas was an international student at Valparaiso University.
The university issued a statement Monday about his death.
"It is with deep sorrow that Valparaiso University announces the death of one of our own, Abdullah Alqirnas, a freshman from Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Alqirnas recently completed his English proficiency courses at Arizona State University and enrolled as a student at Valparaiso University to study electrical engineering. In this time of tragedy, our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the Alqirnas family and friends. Details of a remembrance for the campus community are pending."
