VALPARAISO | The Visiting Nurse Association of Porter County will sponsor Lorie’s Lakeside Century bicycle ride Saturday.

Experienced riders, novices, individuals, groups and families are invited to explore the solitude of shaded country roads, spectacular views of Lake Michigan and prairies covered with native wildflowers as they bike along the lake and through the Indiana Dunes and countryside on marked routes.

Lorie’s Lakeside Century is named in memory of Lorie Kirkley, a cardiac rehabilitation nurse at Porter hospital and an avid cyclist who lost her life to a violent crime in 1999. Proceeds from the ride will benefit the programs and services of the Visiting Nurse Association in Lorie’s memory.

Riders can choose their ride distance, ranging from 15 to 100 miles along a variety of routes that include rest stops at the Art Barn, Lions Club Pavilion in New Buffalo, Mich., the Lakeview Pavilion and Garwood Orchard.

Registration includes a continental breakfast, route map, food at rest stops along the way, roadside emergency assistance if needed, and lunch. Riders will receive free registration and a free T-shirt if they obtain pledges or make a tax-deductible donation of $100 or more.

Lorie’s Lakeside Century begins at Liberty Bible Church, 824 N. Calumet Ave. in Chesterton. On-site registration is from 7 a.m. to noon. Registration for the ride is $30. Register online at www.signmeup.com/82205 or visit www.lorieslakesidecentury.org for more information. Children 12 and younger ride for free as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Helmets are required for all riders.

New to the ride this year is an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, featuring pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee and milk for $6.
