BOONE TOWNSHIP | Porter County police are not convinced that a man who approached a home with a bottle of laundry detergent was actually trying to sell the homeowner the detergent.

A resident in the 900 South block of County Road 350 West, in southern Porter County, reported his unusual encounter to the Sheriff's Department.

The homeowner told police two men arrived at his home in a minivan about 2:20 p.m. Wednesday. The homeowner said one man remained in the van while the other man knocked on his door.

The homeowner said the man was holding a bottle of All brand detergent and he asked the homeowner if he wanted to try the detergent. The homeowner told police the conversation was "odd." Then, the man got back into his van and drove away.

The man with the detergent was described as a white man in his 30s, about 6 feet tall weighing 225 pounds. He had light red hair and was clean cut.

The van was silver with handicapped plates.

The homeowner alerted police because he was aware of burglaries in the area. He told police he believes the pair would have burglarized his house had he not been there.

Police Sgt. Larry LaFlower urges anyone who may have had contact with these men to call their local police department, or call the Porter County Sheriff's Department at (219) 477-3000.
