This fall, the Housing Industry Team (a collaborative group comprised of the Greater Northwest Indiana Association of REALTORS, Home Builders Association of Northwest Indiana and Indiana Mortgage Bankers Association) came together to support a housing related organization in Porter County.
They chose Housing Opportunities, which serves people in need throughout Porter County and LaPorte County. According to Housing Opportunities, the average age of a homeless person in Porter County is 9 years old. Housing Opportunities is committed to housing hope by becoming the recognized regional resource and model for a continuum of programs encompassing prevention, crisis intervention & permanent housing.
The Housing Industry Team hosted an event in September to fund various projects at Housing Opportunities’ Spring Valley Shelter in Valparaiso, which included replacement of flooring in two of the shelter’s apartments, organization of a much needed utility/storage room and reorganization of the shelter’s food pantry.
Since opening the Spring Valley Shelter location, 126 children have called the shelter home. Currently, Housing Opportunities is home for 108 homeless children and their families.
Last year, the Housing Industry Team came together to support a Lake County housing-related organization. The group fundraised to replace a play yard for the domestic violence shelter Haven House. They hope to continue their efforts throughout Northwest Indiana in years to come.
