PORTER COUNTY | A Lake Station man was arrested Thursday in connection with an armed robbery reported in October.
Jose Alvarez, 38, is charged with armed robbery, a Class B Felony.
Porter County police were called about 7 p.m. Oct. 12 to the area of U.S. 30 and County Road 700 West in Union Township where a man said he had been robbed of cash, his cell phone and bracelet.
The victim told police he met Alvarez through a mutual friend at a Merrillville restaurant where the victim told Alvarez about wanting to buy a Bobcat.
The victim told police Alvarez arranged for him to see the vehicle at someone's pole barn in southern Porter County. He told police he returned home to think about the purchase, then told Alvarez he wanted to buy the equipment.
Alvarez picked him up at his home to take him to purchase the Bobcat, but stopped his car on U.S. 30 near 700 West saying he had to urinate.
The victim told police Alvarez got out of the car, walked to the rear of the car and returned with a black semiautomatic pistol, according to court documents.
Police said the victim was told to leave his cash, cell phone and bracelet on the seat and to get out of the car. Police said Alvarez drove off.
Detectives were able to identify Alvarez and used cell phone records to corroborate the account of witnesses and the victim.
