VALPARAISO | A Center Township man will be sentenced to 15 years behind bars if a judge accepts his plea of guilty to a felony count of sexual misconduct with a minor on allegations of abusing a girl for a period of at least three years.
Alex Coronado, who was 57 last fall, entered into the agreement in return for prosecutors dropping two counts of child molesting, including one that carried a potential sentence of 20 to 50 years behind bars.
The proposed deal was taken under consideration by Porter Superior Court Judge Bill Alexa, who will decide June 28 whether to accept it and carry out the agreed sentence. Coronado remains free on bond.
The female victim in the case told investigators she informed her mother about the abuse when it began and before it elevated to the level of sexual intercourse, but nothing was done, court records state.
She told investigators they had intercourse more than 50 times over a period of at least three years, with the last case of occurring in early July, records state.
The girl's mother confirmed her daughter had reported the abuse to her years ago, but she thought it was a misunderstanding, according to documents.
Coronado is accused of providing the girl with alcohol and marijuana before the sexual activity, which allegedly began when she was younger than 14.
The girl provided investigators with a pair of her underwear sealed in a plastic bag that she says contains a DNA sample linking Coronado to the sexual abuse, according to documents.
