VALPARAISO | A 26-year-old Center Township man was taken into custody Wednesday on allegations of stealing at least $6,000 from his grandfather.
Vincent Mercaldo III is charged with felony counts of forgery and theft, according to police.
The grandfather, who lives with Mercaldo, reported the theft after noticing the funds missing from his checking account, police said. He was unsure if his grandson has a job, but told police he is always walking around in a business suit.
A manager at First Source Bank remembered dealing with Mercaldo on several occasions and surveillance video shows the young man cashing his grandfather's checks using his own military identification, police said.
Mercaldo was taken into custody at 8 p.m. while at TGI Fridays at 81 Silhavy Road in Valparaiso, police said. When asked if he knew why police were there, he said "yes," they said.
