VALPARAISO | A Valparaiso man was shot Wednesday night in an apartment by a friend during an argument, police said.

Officers arrested the friend a short time later. The victim was treated at Porter Regional Hospital for a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound to his arm.

Police were called at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday to an apartment at 355 Andover Drive, where they found the 18-year-old man shot in the forearm.

Police learned the victim had been arguing with Steven Tayler, 28, of Valparaiso.

Police said Tayler shot the 18-year-old and fled the apartment.

Officers searched the area and found Tayler at another unit in the apartment complex, where he was taken into custody.

Police said the handgun owned and used by Tayler had been hidden in a neighbor's apartment.

Police said Tayler and the victim were visiting one of Tayler's relatives when the shooting occurred.

Tayler is being held in the Porter County Jail on the charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a Class B felony.
