Engel names Soldier of the Year
Spc. Jared Engel, formerly of Portage, is the son of Phil and Judy Engel, both of Portage. He is a 2006 graduate of Portage High School where he played soccer and football. He has been a soldier with the Indiana National Guard for four years and was part of the 113th Engineer Battalion in Gary. He transitioned to active duty in November 2012. Engel and his wife are stationed at Fort Benning, GA. He was selected by Fort Benning as the Soldier of the Year. Engel (Soldier) of the 199th Infantry Brigade, won top honors in a field of 15 competitors in the 2013 Maneuver Center of Excellence Drill Sergeant of the Year, NCO and Soldier of the Year Competition.
Four complete basic training
Army Pfc. Corey G. Shelton II, Army National Guard Pvt. Sammy D. Herring, Army National Guard Pfc. Avrielle Roberson and Army Pvt. Shawnna J. Ramer have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
Shelton is the son of Corey Shelton, of Gary, and Shaniea Adams, of Virginia Beach, Va. He is a 2011 graduate of Ocean Lakes High School, Virginia Beach, Va.
Herring is the brother of Issac Hayslett and Michael Brooks, both of Park Forest. He is a 2008 graduate of Bloom High School, Chicago Heights.
Roberson is the daughter of Diane Perry, of Chicago Heights. She is a 2010 graduate of Bloom High School, Chicago Heights. She earned an associate degree in 2012 from Lincoln College.
Ramer is the son of Ryann and Kurt Ramer, of Westville. He is a 2011 graduate of Westville High School.
Stewart assigned to aircraft carrier
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Slavica V. Stewart, daughter of Ruzica and Lazar Vujanic, of Crown Point, and other Sailors assigned to the nimitz class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) recently got underway for a final sustainment exercise before the ship's upcoming deployment.
Truman departed Naval Station Norfolk along with embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 and 1st Combined Destroyer Squadron staff, joined with guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56), USS Gettysburg (CG 64) and guided missile destroyers USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) and USS Mason (DDG 87) for the exercise.
The ships and embarked units training together is focusing on maritime security operations, air defense, counter-piracy and anti-submarine warfare.
This exercise is similar to the composite unit training exercise the strike group completed earlier this year. Exercises such as SUSTAINEX and COMPTUEX ensure strike groups are trained and certified for an overseas deployment.
Stewart joined the Navy in October 2009.
Hill completes Navy training
Navy Seaman Samson E. Hill, son of Alma C. Hill- Scott, of Harvey, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Hill completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
Hill is a 2006 graduate of Thornton High School of Harvey. He is a 2011 graduate of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
Two complete training in Texas
Air Force Airman Adeleke O. Adewusi and Air Force Airman Luis A. Vasquez graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airmen completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Adewusi is the brother of Adeola Adewusi,of Collinsville, and Adetola Adewusi, of Dolton.
Vasquez is the brother of Lori Rodriguez, of Hammond. He is a 2011 graduate of Gavit High School.
