Huizenga completes power training
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael L. Huizenga has graduated from the U.S. Navy's Nuclear Power School at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C.
Nuclear Power School is a rigorous six-month course that trains officer and enlisted students in the science and engineering fundamental to the design, operation and maintenance of naval nuclear propulsion plants.
Graduates next undergo additional instruction at a prototype training unit before serving as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard a nuclear-powered surface ship or as an Electronics Technician aboard a nuclear-powered submarine.
Huizenga is the son of Laurie and Bob Huizenga Jr., of Crown Point. He is a 2008 graduate of Illiana Christian High School in Lansing.
Deven graduates from basic training
Army National Guard Pvt. Robert M. Deven has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
Deven is the son of Fred Deven, of Valparaiso, and Yolanda Deven, of East Post Oak Drive, Frankston, Texas. He is a 2011 graduate of Wheeler High School.
Stewart promoted in the Navy
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Slavica V. Stewart, daughter of Ruzica and Lazar Vujanic, of Crown Point, was promoted to her current rank while aboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, home ported in Norfolk, Va.
Stewart was promoted based on sustained superior job performance and proficiency in her designated specialty.
She joined the Navy in October 2009.
Reardon completes Navy training
Navy Seaman Nicole A. Reardon, daughter of Consuelo Decero, of Valparaiso, and Michael G. Reardon, of Crete, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Reardon completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations." This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.
Reardon is a 2011 graduate of Crete-Monee High School.
Burchuk completes electrician's course
Marine Corps Pvt. Gregory K. Burchuk, son of George E. Burchuk, of Portage, completed the Basic Electrician's Course.
During the course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C., students receive instruction on the repair and maintenance of generators, transformers and power lines. In addition to the mechanical skills involved, studies also include circuitry, electrical theory and related safety procedures.
Burchuk is a 2010 graduate of Portage High School.
