Tonello visits Adriatic Sea country of Montenegro 

Navy Seaman Apprentice Nicholas E. Tonello, son of Lisa M. and Anthony J. Tonello, of Hobart,  along with other sailors attached to the guided-missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG-99) visited Bar, Montenegro.

Tonello had the opportunity to experience Montenegro's culture and spend time engaging with the community, including sporting events with Montenegrin sailors, tour of the towns of Perast, Koto and Skadar Lake, and a tour of Montenegro's vineyards.

Tonello is a 2008 graduate of Wheeler High School and joined the Navy in March 2011.


Three complete basic training at Fort Benning

Army National Guard Pvt. Jesse Cuevas Sr., Army National Guard Pvt. Michael R. Aimutis II and Army Pvt. Daniel W. Little have graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldiers received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, along with Army history, core values and traditions.

Cuevas is the nephew of Guadalupe Cuevas, and brother of Theresa Cuevas, both of East Chicago.

Aimutis is the son of Karie Geib, of Gary, and grandson of Lena Gassner, of Merrillville.

Little is the son of Lisa Little, of Munster. He is a 2010 graduate of Munster High School.


Ten complete basic training

Army National Guard Pvt. Juan A. Reyes Jr., Army National Guard Pvt. Chase E. Cota, Army National Guard Pfc. Hannah M. Lundstrom, Army Reserve Pvt. Florida M. Garr, Army National Guard Pvt. Yvonne Meraz, Army National Guard Pfc. Timothy M. Faber, Army Reserve Pfc. Valetina Rosas, Army National Guard Pvt. Steven T. Schultz, Army National Guard Spec. Lauren McClain and Army Pvt. Keiquan Brown Jr. have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Reyes is the son of Elena Padilla and Eros Reyes, and nephew of Rosario Padilla, all of Hammond.

Cota is the son of Diane Cota, of Westville. He is also the son of Charles Cota and stepson of Michelle Cota, of Porter.

Lundstrom is the daughter of Eric Lundstrom and Sandy Lundstrom, both of Hobart.

Garr is the daughter of Steven Garr, of Valparaiso and she is also the daughter of Denise Miller and stepdaughter of Kevin Miller, both of Richmond.

Meraz is the sister of Edgar Tirado, of East Chicago, and niece of Evelia and Prodenciano Garcia, of Whiting.

Faber is the son of Ethel Kokas, of Chicago Heights. He is a graduate of Hobart High School.

Rosas is the daughter of Juana Rosas, of Chicago. She is a 2012 graduate of Carver Military Academy, Chicago.

Schultz is the son of Michael Guyette, of New Lenox. He is a 2012 graduate of Boone Grove High School.

McClain is the daughter of Lawanda McClain and stepdaughter of Anthony Smith, both of Chicago. She is a 2006 graduate of Thornwood High School, South Holland. She earned a bachelor's degree in 2010 from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb.

Brown is the son of Tanisha Taylor, of Hazel Crest. He is a 2011 graduate of Thornwood High School, South Holland.



Sharp assigned with Seabees construction battalion in gulf

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Daniel R. Sharp, son of Hope and Tom Rainwater, of DeMotte, and is assigned to with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133, Gulfport, Miss.

Sharp, along with other Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133, begun construction along with the Tajikistan Ministry of Defense's construction force on the first phase of a $1 million project at Shamsi Base, Bahrain.

The first-ever SeaBee mission in Tajikistan has been assigned to NMCB 133 and is a Global Peace Operation Initiative in support of the Office of Military Cooperation.

The first phase is scheduled to be completed in early 2013 which includes building of a new roof, an English language lab classroom, renovation to kitchen and electrical distribution repairs.


Timothy Huizenga receives Army Achievement Medal

Army Staff Sgt. Timothy R. Huizenga has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal.

The medal is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces, who while serving in any capacity with the Army have distinguished themselves by meritorious service or achievement while serving in a combat or non-combat area.

Huizenga is a special bandsperson assigned to the United States Army Field Band at Fort George G. Meade, Md. He has served in the military for four years.

He is the son of Paul and Maureen Huizenga, of St. John.

Huizenga graduated in 2003 from Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights. He earned a bachelor of science degree in music in 2007 and a performer diploma in 2008, both from Indiana University in Bloomington.
