VALPARAISO | In the category of "every little bit helps," the city officially added 5.66 miles of roads to its inventory for state certification in order to qualify for additional state highway money.

The city's Board of Public Works and Safety approved the action last week at the request of Engineering Director Tim Burkman. Half the length is to account for the city taking over maintenance of Ind. 130 from the state. The road is divided into Lincolnway from the western limits to the roundabout at LaPorte Avenue and Sturdy Road and Sturdy Road from the roundabout to U.S. 30.

The remaining roads accepted as part of the city system include seven streets totaling 1.5 miles in Beauty Creek Villas; four streets in the Hawthorne subdivision Phase 2 totaling half a mile; four streets in the North Hampstead subdivision totaling a third of a mile; two in the Wildwind development totaling 0.21 miles; Barley Road in front of the new Northcoast Distributing headquarters; and Pilz Place, connecting Town and Country with Glendale Boulevard, which is 0.06 mile.

According to Dan Bastin, director of settlements for the Indiana state auditor's office, the city will receive about $702.25 for each mile added to its inventory. The 5.66 miles will mean an addition of almost $3,975 in gas tax funds in 2013, Bastin said.

Bastin said the formula is different for each county, and a bigger portion of the gas tax money is distributed based on population. The city's total road miles is now 153.3.
