VALPARAISO | Alan Moretton became an Eagle Scout in 2012 from Troop 907 based in Valparaiso.
Moretton's project was an Ecology Recycle System, which required 150 hours to complete.
He built a three-section compost structure with removable front gates at Chesterton Montessori School. He went there from first to sixth grade.
"The compost structure will help the students learn the role of the decomposers in the ecosystem, as well as how to maintain a compost pile for healthy soil," he said. "They will also be able to manage their waste products and learn the best way to utilize this."
He also built a third herb garden identical to the other two that were already there.
The first two gardens were full of soil and herbs, so the new one would give them an opportunity to use their fresh new soil to create a new garden with new types of plants.
Moretton also provided breakfast and lunch for the 15 people that assisted him that day.
Moretton has continued in scouting because of what it has done for him.
"Over time, it has come to be a part of who I am and has given me many of the qualities that make up the person I am today," he said. "Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Also, I give back to scouting because of the opportunities that it has given me, in hope that each and every scout gets to have the same rewarding experiences."
