VALPARAISO | Students at Memorial Elementary School saluted veterans Friday through song and readings along with a special guest, Army Sgt. William Watkins, husband of teacher Alicia Watkins.
Sgt. Watkins serves as a military police officer and has been deployed three times, including to Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Last year, while he was gone, his wife spoke about him and his service to our country. This year, the students get to meet him,” said Memorial Elementary Principal Debbie Misecko.
The program was put together by Memorial’s music teacher, Elizabeth Larson, and art teacher Karyn Wenger spearheaded the wall of bricks, which includes pictures and names of students’ relatives and friends who have served.
“It is important for our students to learn why there is a Veterans Day, who is a ‘veteran,’ and why we have a day set aside to honor them,” Misecko said. “Ultimately, we want the students to learn to honor the history of our country, be appreciative of all that has been done to help preserve the freedoms we have, and to become great citizens of the United States of America.”
