PORTAGE | Milan could use an eye exam and a new pair of glasses. His glasses are basically held together by tape. Christmas for the Elderly program will help make his wish come true.

The Visiting Nurse Association and The Times Media Co. jointly sponsor the charity, which has raised more than $630,000 in the past 26 years. This money helps improve quality of lives for Porter County residents. Last year, 532 donors gave more than $46,000 to provide equipment and help to seniors.

Milan, 55, has had his lower legs amputated and has been through a lot medically.

"I've had triple bypass, and a kidney and pancreas transplant," he said. "I've basically been through the war."

He was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when he was 5.

He has been receiving help through the VNA.

"A new pair of glasses would really help," he said. Also, some gift cards for groceries and gas would also help Milan.

The VNA is accepting donations to help Milan and others who need assistance. The VNA is a nonprofit home health agency licensed by the state.
