VALPARAISO | Teamwork, collaboration and diligence are all words that embody the Northview Elementary Science and Math Bowl Teams. In a special ceremony earlier this month, the two teams comprised of 4th and 5th graders were honored by the Valparaiso School Board for finishing first place in their respective state competitions.
It was a record-setting 7th-straight state title win for the Knights Science Bowl Team. “I love to watch the kids push themselves,” said Science Bowl coach Kelly Jones. “They work so hard and love to learn.”
Not to be outdone, the Northview Math Bowl Team also captured first place in the recent state competition. “It’s been great watching them work together and bring out the best in each other,” Math Bowl coach Gary Gross said. “This is a very special group of kids."
It was an unprecedented year for Northview, as students swept the Academic Bowl season by winning first place in the state Spell, Math, and Science bowls.
“It’s a great school year for Northview and we are also proud of the efforts by all the Valparaiso elementary schools; many of which earned top 10 finishes in these same academic competitions,” Northview Principal Loren Hershberger said. “This is an amazing group of kids that are involved in many activities beyond the academic competitions, look out for each other, and demonstrate great teamwork."
Several students competed on both the math and science bowl teams, and for the month of overlap, prepared for both competitions simultaneously.
Valparaiso Schools Superintendent Michael Berta ended the award ceremony by congratulating the students and encouraged them to “continue to demonstrate the values and hard work they have shown throughout these competitions.”
