VALPARAISO | Valparaiso High School senior Christian Nusbaum hopes to help people in need of bone marrows.
To help earn the rank of Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 907 in Valparaiso, Nusbaum has chosen a service project to help benefit the community. He decided to host a bone marrow donor drive to benefit Be The Match.
Being a survivor of leukemia himself, this project is very important to the 17-year-old.
"At the age of 11, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia," he said. "I did not require a bone marrow transplant myself, but I have friends who did. A bone marrow donor drive is important because 70 percent of all patients who need a transplant don't have a matched donor in their family so they turn to Be the Match to find a donor."
Nusbaum hopes to add 540 new donors to the registry.
His final drive is from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Valparaiso University in the Athletics-Recreation Center during their annual St. Baldrick's head shaving event.
To join the registry, people must be between the ages of 18 and 44 and in good general health. They must fill out some paperwork and have their cheeks swabbed. The people at Be The Match will process the information and if if they match someone in need. There is no cost to do this.
