A number of region schools scored highly in the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl state finals Saturday, with two taking top honors.
Thomas Jefferson Middle School, in Valparaiso, won first place in Junior Division, Class 2, at the Spell Bowl for the sixth year in a row.* In the Senior Division, Kouts High School placed first in Class 4.
The competition was held before a standing-room-only crowd at Purdue University in West Lafayette.
New Prairie Middle School, in New Carlisle, placed third in the Junior Division, Class 3.
Kahler Middle School, in Dyer, placed fourth in the Junior Division, Class 1 competition. Ben Franklin Middle School, in Valparaiso, placed sixth.
River Forest Middle School, in New Chicago, placed fourth in the Junior Division, Class 3 competition.
Morgan Township Middle School placed fourth in the Junior Division, Class 4 competition. DeMotte Christian placed sixth.
Morgan Township High School came in third in Senior Division, Class 4.
Also in the Senior Division, Class 2, New Prairie High School placed third. Hanover Central High School placed fifth.
