WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP | An off-duty Porter County Sheriff's Department deputy was killed Wednesday afternoon when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Ind. 2 and County Road 450 East in Porter County.

The name of the officer was being withheld pending notification of family.

The crash prompted authorities to close the highway while Valparaiso police investigated the accident. The county asked Valparaiso to handle the investigation because the wreck involved one of its deputies.

The police investigation showed the deputy was westbound on Ind. 2 when the pickup traveling eastbound turned north onto 450 East. The crash occurred as the truck was turning onto the road.

The deputy was taken to Porter Hospital Valparaiso Campus and later died of his injuries. The pickup truck driver was not injured. The investigation is continuing.
