VALPARAISO | One person suffered minor burns Wednesday morning when a debris fire spread to an unoccupied house near U.S. 30.

That person, who was not identified, was treated at the scene by medics.

Fire officials said the home, north of U.S. 30 just east of Axe Avenue, was not occupied. People working on the home were burning debris when the fire spread and caught a building attached to the home on fire.

The fire burned through the roof of the yellow one-story home.

Fire officials said a building attached to the home was damaged, but the house sustained only smoke damage.

The fire prompted the closure of westbound U.S. 30 at Linwood Avenue, about a mile east of the fire.

Fire crews left the scene about 12:20 p.m. and U.S. 30 was reopened about 12:30 p.m.
