Meet the animals and family hike

Meet the animals and family hike is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 4 at Sunset Hill Farm. Families are invited to stop by Sunset Hill Farm and meet the animals and their caretakers and then stay for a short hike around the park with our naturalist.

Friday family campout

Grab your tent, some hot dogs and marshmallows and join other families for this affordable fun night of camping at Sunset Hill Farm County Park on Sept. 13. Set up is from 5 to 7 p.m.; cost is $15. Camping is unsupervised.

Four-week meditation program

Learn the ins and out of meditation, which will focus on both the mind and body from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for four consecutive Fridays: Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at Brincka Cross Gardens. Cost is $15 per session or $45 for the series.

Sand painting

Learn the art of layering colored sand to create pictures and designs from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 21 at Brincka Cross Gardens.

Freezing foods

Walk through step-by-step instructions for freezing food at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at Sunset Hill Farm.

Valparaiso parks

Valparaiso parks officials offer many activities this month. Call (219) 462-5144, visit www.valpoparks.org or visit the parks office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 3210 N. Campbell St.

Golf instruction

Instructional golf sessions Linksters Academy, L’il Tigers, and the First Tee, led by LPGA teaching professional Nancy Bender are available for all ages and skill levels are at Creekside Golf Course and Training Center, 2355 Clifford Road in Valparaiso. Monster Dash Halloween run

Sign up for the newest special event of Fit City and Valpo parks. Oct. 27 is the inaugural Monster Dash. It includes a 1K Family Fun Run as well as a 5K race, beginning and ending at Central Park Plaza in downtown Valpo. Dress as your favorite superhero, villain or fairy tale character for this costume fun run. 1K is $15, 5K is $25 or $30 for both.

T’ai chi session in September

Practice the martial art to enhance coordination, concentration, relaxation and inner energy flow. For adults 18 and older, this class is taught by an experienced instructor one hour per week from Sept. 24 through Nov. 12. The price is $75.

Register for Popcorn Fest races

Sign up now for the traditional kickoff races of the world-famous Popcorn Festival in downtown Valparaiso. This year the races begin and end at Central Park Plaza. Puff races are for 2- to 9-year-olds (age as of Sept. 7); everyone who runs receives a participation ribbon. The Puff price is $10 through today, or $20 after. Popcorn Panic runners and walkers will register for the 5-mile run or the 5K walk for $35.

Youth coed volleyball registration

Grades one through six can learn and play volleyball this winter in this eight-week program. VU volleyball players will run the practices, making it fun to learn the basics of the game. All practices and games are at the Valparaiso Boys & Girls Club. Price is $65/77 ($35 less if a member of the Boys & Girls Club).

Hayride driver needed

Group hayride reservations begin in mid-September and run through Nov. 3. Interested parties can apply for the weekend hayride driver(s) position at the parks office or online at ValpoParks.org.

Discovery cottage

Registration is available for the fall and winter line up of classes at Discovery Cottage, 1155 Harrison. New class times in late afternoon are available for kids to discover science, nature, music, theater and crafts. Discovery Cottage is for ages 18 months to 8 years.

Group hayride reservations

Group hayride reservations begin in mid-September and run through Nov. 3. It’s a great gathering for family outings, service groups, youth organizations and more. The hour and half events are available Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Portage parks

The Portage Parks Department offers a variety of programs. The office is at 2100 Willowcreek Road. Call (219) 762-1675.

Hayride scenes wanted

Raise money for your civic club or Scout troop. Each scene will earn $200 and be eligible for additional prize money. The Haunted Hayride is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 24 to 26 at Woodland Park. To reserve a space, call Pam at (219) 762-1675.

Woodland Park preschool

Openings for Tuesday/Thursday afternoon class, for ages 3 and 4. Class begins at noon Sept. 3. There is a one-time $20 nonrefundable registration fee. Class tuition is $70 per month for residents and $80 for nonresidents and is due by the 1st of each month. Bring a copy of the student's birth certificate.

Christmas Craft Show vendors wanted

The price is $45 for a 10-foot-by-10-foot booth. The fair is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at Woodland Park. Entry forms are available at the park office or call (219) 762-1675.
