WESTVILLE | The Purdue University North Central American Sign Language Club will host an ASL Coffeehouse from 6 to 9 p.m. March 15 at Cornucopia Coffee Co., 210 Lincolnway.
Guest presenter Jan Pool will address the topic of deaf education starting at 7 p.m.
Pool is a retired educator from Bailey Elementary School in Chesterton. Her focus and experience is on the early years of a deaf or hard of hearing child's education, getting children exposed to and fluent in language so that they can focus on academics.
This presentation will be of particular interest to parents with deaf or hard of hearing children and early childhood, elementary education or special education teachers or students.
The event is open to all community members. Children are welcome to attend with a parent or adult.
Participants are asked to use ASL. The coffeehouse provides an ideal opportunity to practice ASL to better communicate with friends, co-workers or family members. Coffee, food and drink may be ordered throughout the evening.
The ASL Club has another coffeehouse set for April 19.
