VALPARAISO | A 73-year-old Chesterton woman who pushed and tried to head butt a police officer was taken to the ground, handcuffed and taken to Porter County Jail on Wednesday after a disturbance at Broadway Café.
Wilma Wilkie was charged with resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.
Police were called to the restaurant 1805 Morthland Drive (U.S. 30) for a possible overdose.
When officers arrived, they found owner John Vitogiannis bleeding from the bridge of his nose.
He told police Wilkie and a man had come into the restaurant shortly before 2 p.m. The man then left the business and came back in, and was suspected of taking an iPod from a car parked in a nearby Valparaiso University parking lot.
Vitogiannis sat the man in a chair near the front door and police were called. While seated, the man took a bottle of pills from his pocket and swallowed the pills. When the man tried to run off, Vitogiannis pushed him into another booth. The two started to fight, and the man head-butted Vitogiannis, causing his nose to bleed.
Police said the man ran out a rear exit and Wilkie left through the front door.
The man was never found, but a warrant for his arrest was sought. Police are seeking to charge the man with disorderly conduct, battery and theft.
