VALPARAISO | An elderly woman was startled Thursday morning when she awoke to find a neighbor's teenage son sleeping on her living room floor, police said.
The woman told Valparaiso police she woke up just before 8:30 a.m. and found the 17-year-old boy sleeping on the floor, next to her couch.
Officers arrived at the home in the 200 block of Roosevelt Road and were able to wake the boy up after yelling at him and touching his arm.
Police said the boy was groggy and confused. After medics checked him out, he said he was out with some friends the previous night and thought they dropped him off at his mother's house, police said.
Police said the boy's eyes were glossy and he smelled of alcohol. He initially denied drinking, but later told officers he drank a beer with his friends, police said.
The boy had a blood alcohol content of 0.11 and was taken to Porter hospital for clearance before being taken to the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center.
The teen will face a magistrate on charges of residential entry and minor consumption of alcohol, police said.
The woman told police she's unsure how the boy got into her home. She said her back door was locked and the front door was also locked and had a board up against it.
