UNION TOWNSHIP | A 48-year-old Union Township man was in stable condition Thursday at Porter Regional Hospital and faces drunken driving charges after police said he fled from them a day earlier on U.S. 30 and crashed his motorcycle.
A Lake County police officer said he saw Michael Lopez, of 316 W. County Road 100 North, pull out eastbound on U.S. 30 from Maxim Power Sports in Merrillville and continue into Porter County just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
After seeing Lopez pass cars by driving on the right shoulder of the highway, the officer said he turned on his emergency lights and Lopez sped away, weaving through traffic.
By the time the officer caught up with Lopez, he had crashed and was off the roadway. Lopez reportedly told police he struck the back of a car.
Porter County police said Lopez smelled of alcohol and had two bottles of Schnapps fall out of his jacket while being treated by medics.
He was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of 0.27 or more than three times the legal driving limit of 0.08, according to police.
He faces multiple drunken driving charges, as well as a felony count of operating while a habitual traffic violator.
