VALPARAISO | A 19-year-old Valparaiso woman was arrested Friday and charged with attempted robbery after a failed purse snatching last month.

Shationna Morris has been charged with attempted robbery, a Class C felony.

Police said a woman reported the attempted robbery April 15 at the Kmart store at 2801 Calumet Ave.

The woman told police she was walking to the store at about 5 p.m. when a teen talking on a cellphone approached her and attempted to grab a purse from her arm.

When the would-be robber failed to pull the purse away, the teen fled east across the parking lot toward Calumet Avenue. Police searched the area, but were unable to find the suspect.

Police said they were able view the suspect on a nearby security video and identify her as Morris.

Police said she was arrested Friday morning. During an interview with Detective Sgt. David Castellanos, Morris admitted she had attempted to steal the purse.

She was taken to Porter County Jail.
