VALPARAISO | Quick thinking and a little detective work by neighbors led to the arrest of a Morgan Township man who police said stole two pieces of farm equipment and sold them for scrap.

Lucas Miracle, 23, was arrested Monday in Valparaiso and faces felony theft charges.

Police said a man who lives in the 200 East block of County Road 500 North saw a man taking farm equipment from a neighboring farm. He called the owner who told him he had not sold the equipment. The witness also called another nearby resident, who drove to a scrap yard in Westville, where he found one of the pieces of stolen equipment, a John Deere disc valued at $3,000. Police said Miracle sold it for $400.

Police said Miracle also took a Kilbros gravity wagon, valued at $1,000 and sold it for $148.75.

Police reported two other thefts from farms in the past week. On Friday, a Washington Township farmer reported three grain wagons taken from his farm on the 10 North block of County Road 450 East. The total loss was about $5,500.

On Thursday, a Pleasant Township farmer reported a grain wagon and field finisher were taken from his farm in the 500 East block of County Road 1400 South. The total loss was about $14,000, according to police.
