CENTER TOWNSHIP | Police responded to a shooting early Saturday that left two dead in Center Township.
Porter County sheriff's officers and Valparaiso police were called at 2:13 a.m. Saturday to a rural home in the 1500 block of West Lincolnway, Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Larry LaFlower stated in a news release.
A man and a woman found inside the residence had been shot multiple times, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said. The home is just outside city limits at the edge of an industrial park.
Police do not believe the shooting was a murder-suicide and are treating it as a homicide investigation, LaFlower said. Police did not believe neighbors in the area were in any danger as of Saturday night, he said.
Neither shooting victim was named, pending identification and notification of family. As of Saturday night, it was unknown if the two were married or if they were related.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus, where she died from her injuries.
Harris said he hopes to conduct autopsies in Mishawaka and release their names Sunday.
Residents on Emmetsburg Avenue, a north-south road that is east of the house, said sheriff's police knocked on their doors at 7 a.m. to inform them of the shooting. Residents said they did not know the victims and believed the house to be a rental.
Information being released was scarce as police were sifting through evidence. Porter County sheriff's police are investigating with the assistance of Valparaiso police.
Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to call the Porter County Sheriff's Department at (219) 477-3000.
